RIP Araki Shingo ( ; __ ; )

Seriously, what the hell is wrong with 2011???? I don't know how many posts I wrote about artists who died this year. Yesterday was Araki Shingo's turn, one of the greatest character designer japanimation and manga have ever known. He died at the age of 73, juste one month before his 74th birthday.

Araki Shingo became famous in drawing for anime such as Cutey Honey and Grendizer. But I became a big fan of the artist once I've seen all his talent when he designed the characters of the anime of Saint Seiya. Kurumada Masami, Saint Seiya's original mangaka, never been a good drawer at all. Araki Shingo totally unleashed the beautiful artistic potential within Saint Seiya in revisiting with his very own style Kurumada's characters. I sincerely think the huge success of Saint Seiya would have been totally different without Araki's touch.

These past years, Araki Shingo was discrete and working on personal projects. Unfortunately we'll never see the final results.

May you rest in peace Araki-san...

"L'animation et la bande dessinée japonaise en France (1970-2002)" par Setni Barro

Classique!

En 2007, un dénommé Setni Baro a eu la gentillesse de m'envoyer son mémoire portant sur "L'animation et la bande dessinée japonaise en France (1970-2002)". Etudiant en histoire à la Sorbonne, sa démarche m'intrigua autant qu'elle me plut. En effet, alors que le manga et la japanimation son éternellement considérés comme des loisirs (dévalorisants), j'ai apprécié l'envie de Setni de présenter à une sphère académique de quoi cette sous-culture nipponne retournait vraiment: un véritable miroir social des us et des mœurs de la société japonaise d'après guerre. En 2007, je tenais alors un blog traitant de japanimation et rap américain (joyeux mélange), et les nombreux chapitres de ce travail devaient être régulièrement publiés. Toutefois, devant l'ampleur de la tâche et le temps que cela me prenait, je dus me résoudre à arrêter. Enfin, de l'eau a coulé sous les ponts (ou "sous l'éponge" comme dirait mon ami Milos) et je vous propose désormais de télécharger cet excellent travail dans son intégralité!

Dragon Ball aura marqué toute une génération.

Bien que les mangas et anime pris en guise d'exemple dans ce mémoire datent un peu (on voit clairement que Setni Baro fait partie de l'ancienne école), le tout est très bien documenté et exposé. Je regrette simplement que des séries plus récentes et peut-être plus pertinentes n'aient pas été passées au peigne fin, m'enfin je chipote.

Quoiqu'il en soit, ce pavé se doit d'être lu absolument par toutes celles et ceux qui se disent animefans. Bonne lecture, et n'hésitez pas à jeter un œil à la bibliographie, de très bons ouvrages y sont référencés!

Love Of My Life : Neon Genesis Evangelion + Utada Hikaru "Beautiful World" (Song)

Yoshiyuki Sadamoto's style is pure illness!...

Thinking of it, I'm such a strange animefan sometimes. I been into manga and japanimation during all my childhood, then I been into rollerblading, which means I almost forgot manga culture. And finally I came back to this part of Asian subculture. But do you know how?

It's all thanks to Neon Genesis Evangelion. I discovered that anime of Gainax studio in 1998, and I immediately became a fan. In the first episode, you can already see the attention of detail of its creator Hideaki Anno, the thoroughness of his work and of course the overall quality of the animation. You have like everything in Evangelion: from the sexy characters (I'm such a fan of Rei Ayanami and Misato Katsuragi, 2 of my favorite anime/manga characters ever!...) to the music and the different atmospheres. Because Evangelion isn't all about giant robots fighting against strange creatures called Angels. There are also reflection, deep personalities, an incredible scenario, a rich background full of specifics, an amazing character design done by Yoshiyuki Sadamoto (my favorite drawer)... All these elements assembled together create a unique universe where fiction (an alien threat mysteriously attacks Tokyo-3) meets reality (the characters live in Japan and have their personal problems). After all these years, Neon Genesis Evangelion is still my favorite anime.

We're in 2011 right now, more than 13 years after my first encounter with EVA and Angels. And I'm really happy to watch the new movies of Evangelion ("You Are (Not) Alone", "You Can (Not) Advance"...), they're like a remix of the original story with a lot of surprises. If you're a fan, you can't miss them. And if you don't know anything about Evangelion, it's a good way to discover it.

And it's always a pleasure to see Misato, Rei and Asuka again after all this time. Here's the main theme of the new Evangelion movies: "Beautiful World" by the legendary Utada Hikaru ^^:

Hi people! I really wanted to thank everyone who viewed, liked and shared my video profile made by 21lifestyles ^^! It really counts since what I'm doing in the vid (and in general as well ^^) isn't especially spectacular: I'm just talking about who I am, what I like and what I do. That's all! #NowWatching : Claymore (TV Serie)

As long as there are beautiful women in an anime or a manga, there's like 75% of chance I'll like it even if the scenario is non-existent (Sailor Moon?). Claymore features very nice female fighters (Miria and Galathea <3) and an excellent story. I discovered the original manga of Norihiro Yagi at first, his drawing style is quite austere and stiff but I got used to it. The anime style is more pleasant and lively.

In the anime, the Claymores are just gorgeous... You know what? Read the manga to discover the whole story (since the screenplay of the anime is shorter than the story of the manga) and watch the anime to see how hot the Claymores are!...


I'm quite surprised there are not many Claymore doujins... Mmmh...

美少女戦士セーラームーン

I ain't ashamed to say it: I'm a very big fan of Sailor Moon! I'm watching Sailor Moon S right now, and I do remember I was in love with characters such as Sailor Jupiter (Makoto Hino), Sailor Venus (Minako Aino), Sailor Mars (Rei Hino), Sailor Uranus (Haruka Tenoh) and Sailor Neptune (Michiru Kaioh)!... And it's still the case ;).

That's why I decided to start a serie of sexy Sailor Moon artworks. Here's "The Hidden Face Of Jupiter", but it's the clean version... Who said "hentai"?...
