Seriously, what the hell is wrong with 2011???? I don't know how many posts I wrote about artists who died this year. Yesterday was Araki Shingo's turn, one of the greatest character designer japanimation and manga have ever known. He died at the age of 73, juste one month before his 74th birthday.

Araki Shingo became famous in drawing for anime such as Cutey Honey and Grendizer. But I became a big fan of the artist once I've seen all his talent when he designed the characters of the anime of Saint Seiya. Kurumada Masami, Saint Seiya's original mangaka, never been a good drawer at all. Araki Shingo totally unleashed the beautiful artistic potential within Saint Seiya in revisiting with his very own style Kurumada's characters. I sincerely think the huge success of Saint Seiya would have been totally different without Araki's touch.

These past years, Araki Shingo was discrete and working on personal projects. Unfortunately we'll never see the final results.

May you rest in peace Araki-san...

Heavy D RIP...

2011 is such a bad year for great Hip-Hop artists. After the death of icons such as Nate Dogg and DJ Mehdi, now it's Heavy D's turn. Singer and former leader of Heavy D & The Boyz, Heavy D was one of the first (if not the first) person who built a bridge between Rap and R&B. This formula definitely changed the game.

DJ Mehdi RIP

Wow, September 13 is definitely a sad day for great artists. After the death of 2Pac on that day 15 years ago, it's now DJ Mehdi's turn to disappear. Yes, DJ Mehdi just died a few hours ago, the very same day as Pac. Kinda ironic isn't it.

Mehdi was the pioneer of the Hip-Hop-Electro productions in France. At least the one who really knew how to create them. Even if the beginning of his career was straight Hip-Hop with his group Mafia K'1 Fry in the early 90's, he finally chose to produce more and more Electro joints as time went by.

It would be too long to enlist all the artists he worked with (from Daft Punk to Chromeo and Just Blaze). But if there's one thing you have to know is that DJ Mehdi was a real musical genius. We will regret him, forever.

Nate Dogg RIP + "Regulate" f/ Warren G (Video Clip)

Wow... The world's so fucked up right now: Lybia, Japan, Africa... Violence and death are everywhere. Besides that, Westcoast crooner Nate Dogg died March 15, 2011. I really liked his smooth voice and pimp-daddy style. I heard his voice for the first time on Warren G's classic joint "Regulate". It was in 1994. From then, Nate did collaborate with all the greatest artists in the rap game (from 2pac to Eminem) and was part of super rap group 213 alongside Snoop Dogg and Warren G.

Well Nate Dogg, be sure G-Funk and music will miss you. I loved your hooks...

Killa Sha died on January 18, 2010. He was one of my favorite rapper and also the person who convinced me to draw again after my 6 years off. I'll always be thankful for what Sha did for me... Here's an artwork I did for his first year death anniversary.
